Blog Post #1: Abigael Chalmers

One thing I find interesting on the Internet is Pinterest. At the risk of making this look like a personal social media plug, I am going to reference my own Pinterest account. I love the freedom Pinterest gives me to see things related to my own interests, as well as the freedom it gives me to share things I find interesting. I think it is super cool that you can create different boards for each individual interest and, as someone who loves to be organized, Pinterest helps me feel like I can be creative while being organized in that creativity.

In class we discussed that social media gives us the opportunity to express ourselves and I believe that is what Pinterest does for me. I can find new ideas, share ideas with others, and post things in ways that show my friends and followers what I like. It is a really good way to gain inspiration and, similarly to Instagram and TikTok I find myself scrolling.

However, unlike Instagram and TikTok, Pinterest has always been a place of healing for me. There is little to no negativity and every comment I have seen is positive. Pinterest feels like a community and in a vast place like the Internet, a community is a very important thing to have.

  1. Hi Abigael, I love Pinterest! I also think that it is an outlet for creativity and healing via inspiration and interest. Pinterest is a platform that allows you to be creative without the constant pressure of comparison, influence, and advertisements that you find on TikTok and Instagram - it is one of the calmer social media sites. I also find it interesting that Pinterest has been a staple social media site for so long without losing a following or consumer base (don't quote me on this - not sure what the data is to back this up). Pinterest was among the first social media sites that I downloaded in 7th/8th grade and I have never lost interest in the platform. In comparison, as we noted in class today that as we grow up, the way we interact and see certain social media sites change. I feel like I have always interacted with Pinterest in the same way, with the same level of interest and contentment. I wonder if this is because the platform is more of a site to curate interest for personal use rather than having a heavy emphasis on sharing photos, and getting likes.

  2. Hey Abigael, great job with your initial post! I agree that Pinterest is an interesting platform on the internet. I do not use Pinterest very often, but when I do, it is usually for nail, hair, or decor inspiration. I remember using it a lot when I moved into my University housing and wanted to find ideas for how to decorate. Although this may be the case for me, I can totally see how many people use Pinterest to express themselves through creativity and their own personal interests. One thing that I find interesting about this platform in particular is the fact that most people have had it downloaded for many years. I remember it being extremely popular when I was in middle school, and although it may have a bit less users now, its continuous success over the years shows the overall user enjoyment of Pinterest.

  3. Hi Abigael!

I also share your love for Pinterest! The ability to personalize your feed by pinning your favourite things is truly remarkable. Personally, I find it to be a valuable resource for discovering new recipes, keeping up with the latest fashion trends, and organizing events. It’s refreshing to find a platform that fosters positivity and minimizes negativity. In my opinion, Pinterest is an underrated outlet!
