Blog Post 1: Crystal Xue
One of my favourite Instagram accounts is called @celebface, which posts before and after photos of celebrities and influencers who get plastic surgery or overly edit their social media posts. I like how this account challenges the increased use of filters or editing apps like PhotoShop and FaceTune on social media. I believe the excessive altering of online photos by people, whether they are famous or not, has created unrealistic beauty standards. This can be especially harmful to young people on social media who may not be able to differentiate between edited and non edited photos, or who believe someone naturally looks how they do without plastic surgery. That’s why I really appreciate how this Instagram account is helping clear up these misconceptions and the unhealthy expectations they have resulted in. The posts can help tremendously with the self image of social media users who may be comparing themselves to the altered photos they see.
Hi Crystal! Thank you for sharing this Instagram account with us. I completely agree that the altering of photos online, as well as the popularity of plastic surgery, has created a huge issue when it comes to unrealistic beauty standards. Social media accounts such as this one can definitely help to demonstrate reality, especially for individuals who think that they need to use filters and alter their appearance through surgery. I like how you mention that these issues with appearance within social media are "unhealthy expectations." It is great that there are accounts that can help social media users to recognize what may be an unhealthy expectation, which can therefore lead them to feel better in terms of how they look and what they are posting for others to see.

ReplyDeleteHey Crystal, this is a very interesting account!
Thank you very much for this recommendation, if it wasn't for you I would have never known about it. I agree with you about the amount of filters and applications that are used today to alter the reality of bodies. As you rightly comment this is very dangerous as there are many people who really think that these standards are real and achievable. It is very interesting that there are this kind of accounts to make us see the reality of famous people and so we don't feel so bad about our bodies.
