Blog Post #4: Kaileigh Klein
I’m focusing on the second articulation, entailing looking at how media modes of production are simultaneously modes of communication, affect and accumulation. For the examples given, Martin Luther’s 95 theses as discussed by Standage served as a mode of communication in order to spread the information across Europe while also serving as the mode of affect by having an emotional impact on people, as it challenged the religious beliefs at the time. This allowed for it to have its “mode of accumulation” as the popularity of Luther’s ideas contributed to his power. This allowed him to gain followers and supporters.
This can be connected to the “OH LAWD HE COMIN” internet cat meme, as it’s variability is presented the same way. The mode of communication in this case was done through platforms such as Twitter and Reddit where people were able to view the meme. The mode of affect was for amusement and humor, as the large size of the cat created people to share the meme more as people thought it was humorous. The mode of accumulation was the likes, shares and comments on the meme, gaining attention and allowing anyone on the internet at the 2018-2019 time to recognize the meme in an instant. Both the Luther speech and the internet cat meme allowed for people to see it, feel a certain way and share it in order to create recognizable media.
Hey Kaileigh,
ReplyDeleteThis analysis provides an interesting lens which looks at the relationships between affect, accumulation, communication, and media production. Comparing historical occurrences like Martin Luther's 95 theses to modern phenomena like internet memes highlights how communication channels change over time and across platforms. It's fascinating to observe how emotional impact is used in both cases to attract attention and exert influence. Luther's challenge to religious beliefs and the humorous appeal of the internet cat meme are compared to show the variety of ways that media can connect with audiences and foster engagement. All and all, great post!
Hi Kaileigh, great post.
ReplyDeleteYour view point and use of mode of articulation, as it connects both situations very well. The emotions attached the each "historical" event is siginficant in this context. Both Martin Luther 05, and OH Lawd He Comin caught the attention of many due to their mode of articulation, and the emotions in which we associate these events with. Emotions provide a strong way to connect people on a large scale. Great post.
Hey Kayleigh, great job with your post! Specifically, great job at connecting both the theses and the meme together to relate to the second articulation. You explained well how both examples exemplify how media can communicate ideas, stir emotions and gain recognition. Overall, really good analysis and explanation.
